Kumoma Lodge is a small mountain lodge located in the Oguchi village along the Nakahechi route of the World Heritage Kumano Kodo.
Situated at the exact midpoint between Kumano Hongu Taisha and Kumano Nachi Taisha, at the junction of the challenging mountain passes Ko-unatori-goe and O-unatori-goe, it offers an ideal location for pilgrims walking the Kumano Kodo.
The lodge was renovated from a former agricultural cooperative building and functions not only as accommodation, but also as a residency and creative base for artists.
Artists staying on-site act as hosts and welcome guests during their stay.
This is not a hotel.
It is a renovated old building designed as a “stayable atelier,” offering a mountain-hut-style retreat.
With minimal decoration, it is a place to surrender yourself to the nature and silence of Kumano.
Rest your tired body after a long walk and prepare for the next day’s journey—an authentic Kumano Kodo experience.
Surrounded by rich nature, guests can enjoy swimming and relaxing by the beautiful river just steps away in summer.
At night, only the sounds of insects and flowing water fill the air, offering a rare luxury of doing nothing—far from city life.
Ideal for groups, families, and fellow pilgrims.
We hope this nature-rich place becomes a space where hosts and guests inspire one another.
We sincerely look forward to welcoming you.

A post office and local shop are within walking distance, and river activities are popular in summer.
Buses operate only twice a day,
but this very inconvenience preserves the area’s tranquility and charm.
