Welcome to Casa Nahual
Casa Nahual is a unique guesthouse located in a secluded mountain valley near the southernmost part of the beautiful Izu Peninsula, approximately 1 km up a mountain road from Route 16.
Built and continuously created by the owner and caretakers, together with their children, this home has been transformed through DIY craftsmanship into a playful and artistic space, resembling a one-of-a-kind mountain cabin unlike anywhere else.
From the south-facing rooms and wooden deck, you can enjoy panoramic views of both the ocean and surrounding mountains.
At the mountaintop stands a wind turbine, and within a 200-meter radius there are no neighboring houses. Surrounded by spring water, natural underground water, and untouched wilderness, Casa Nahual is a life-sharing style guesthouse for people who truly appreciate nature and wish to experience authentic coexistence with the natural world.
The unusual location, handmade architecture, and original design create an atmosphere that feels almost like stepping into another country, far removed from ordinary modern life.
Your non-ordinary experience begins from the moment you leave the coastal road and enter the mountain path.

Our Philosophy
Casa Nahual is not simply accommodation.
This place exists to explore a different way of living — one that respects nature rather than placing humans above it.
We believe in an authentic form of sustainability, not as a modern trend, but as a practical way of life.
The owner and caretakers live with the intention of coexisting with nature while embracing creative reuse, recycling materials, handmade living, and conscious resource circulation.
Most furniture, structures, household items, and living spaces have been created through DIY work, recycled materials, artistic ideas, and playful creativity.
Casa Nahual represents an alternative lifestyle that exists outside mainstream modern living.
Alternative means:
• Living outside conventional cultural norms
• Exploring different possibilities beyond mainstream society
• Choosing ways of life that reconnect humans with nature
⸻
The Natural Environment
This house is built on a mountainside surrounded by untouched nature.
This is a place to experience real nature.
We ask guests to understand that this environment is fundamentally different from modern urban living.
Here, we do not view the world from a human-centered perspective.
Instead, we value living together with all forms of life, with respect for every living being.
In nature, insects, animals, plants, and humans all coexist equally.
During summer, insects naturally become very active.
Please understand that encountering insects is simply part of living in a real natural environment.
Just as swimming in the ocean means accepting the existence of jellyfish, staying here means accepting the presence of nature in its authentic form.

Animals Living on the Property
Three cats and one goat permanently live on this property.
Although they rarely enter the guesthouse during your stay, the entire property is part of their living space, and they move freely throughout the land.
When walking outside, you may encounter them.
The cats and goat are generally very friendly toward people.
However, we ask guests to interact with the goat only with an understanding and respect for its natural behavior.
If you feel uncomfortable around the goat, or if you would like direct interaction with the animals, please contact us beforehand.
The host can assist with supervised interaction or temporary restraint if necessary.
Please understand that if any accident or trouble occurs without prior communication, the property owners cannot assume responsibility.
Wild animals also live in the surrounding mountains, including:
• Deer
• Wild boars
• Badgers
• Wild rabbits
• Owls
• Bats
We kindly ask guests not to judge these animals through modern human-centered values, but to respect them simply as fellow living beings sharing this environment.
The caretaker lives separately in another building on the property across the valley.

Water and Ecological Systems
Natural mineral-rich mountain water flows directly from every faucet.
This underground spring water has passed official water quality testing and is completely safe for drinking, bathing, and daily use.
The toilet is a clean flush toilet system designed using the natural slope of underground water flow.
Please note:
This property is not connected to a public water or sewage system.
Wastewater flows directly into the surrounding natural environment, where it is filtered naturally by the ecosystem.
For this reason, we use only environmentally friendly natural cleaning products.
We do not use conventional chemical detergents.
As a result, washing textures and cleaning sensations may feel slightly different from what you are accustomed to.
We appreciate your understanding.
⸻
Kitchen & Nearby Facilities
The kitchen is fully equipped with basic cooking and dining necessities.
Please note:
There are no supermarkets or convenience stores nearby.
We strongly recommend purchasing groceries before arriving.
⸻
Access Notice
From the parking area to the guesthouse there is an extremely steep uphill pathway.
Nearly every guest is surprised by how steep it is.
Please prepare appropriate shoes suitable for walking on uneven mountain terrain.
⸻
Heating During Cold Seasons
From December through early April, guests may use the wood-burning stove inside the house.
Firewood is available for purchase:
• Firewood set: ¥2500
(approximately 2.5 bundles from a local home center)
Guests may also bring their own firewood.
A kerosene heater is also available.
If used, we ask for a fuel contribution of ¥2000.
Outside winter season, if temperatures fall below 15°C, the wood stove can also be made available depending on weather conditions.
Please contact us in advance if needed.
