About the place:
Welcome to our charming 100-year-old house, a traditional Kominka, with a spacious 180 m2 spread over 2 floors. We offer a cozy private Guest bedroom that's 8 tatamis in size (carpet), perfect for friends, family, couples - accommodating up to 4 people. This room comes equipped with a double bed, a sofa bed, and a single bed, and it's connected to a delightful Kitchenette, which you can use as your private extra space. Here, you'll find a good sized fridge, a microwave, and a coffee machine to enhance your stay. Additionally, you can utilize it for luggage storage during your visit.
Rest assured, during your stay, it will be just you, your friends, your group, or your family in our house. The only other occupants will be my wife Mayumi and myself but you might also be on your own.
Our place, known as "Basecamp Imari" (which is also the name of our cafe and lodge), exudes warmth and friendliness. It stands out as the only establishment in the village not connected to pottery!
Our cafe is located on the first floor and is open usually on Mondays, Fridays, weekends, and national holidays from 10:00 to 16:00.
It might as well be close those days, except for the LODGE.
While we originally hailed from Tokyo, we decided to escape the bustling city and set up a residence here in Kyushu. Our home in Itoshima, just a 40-minute drive away, is where we usually reside, but we stay at the Lodge when we have guests.
In 2019, we took on the task of renovating this old house ourselves, and we like to believe we did a pretty good job :). Our establishment offers a comfortable and cozy atmosphere where you can truly immerse yourself in the ambiance of a rural Japanese village. It's a place where tranquility reigns, with the gentle sound of wind chimes, a relaxing vibe, a sense of time slipping by, the peacefulness of the evening, and the soothing Sound of Silence. Not to mention the stunning sunsets and numerous picturesque walks right on our doorstep. There's a treasure trove of beautiful places to explore within a 35 km radius, which is why we highly recommend renting a car to make the most of your visit.
A little about Okawachiyama Village (source: ANA-CoolJapan):
In the past, porcelain was an exceptionally valuable resource, renowned for its superior quality compared to contemporary pottery. This led to the Nabeshima Clan directly overseeing porcelain production at Okawachiyama and establishing a well-fortified, isolated village to safeguard the technology's secrecy. As a result, Okawachiyama earned the moniker "Village of the Secret Kilns." The pottery produced there, known as Nabeshima-yaki, was among the most exclusive and sought after. Enigmatic and mysterious, the ceramic village of Okawachiyama was designated as a National Historic Site. It's a captivating piece of history you can explore during your stay.
