[About Hirado City]
Hirado City, Nagasaki Prefecture, is a castle town that served as Japan's oldest base for trade with the Western countries. Located at the northernmost tip of Kyushu's mainland, Hirado Island stretches north and south across the Hirado Strait, and is composed of a number of large and small islands scattered around it. Approximately 400 years ago, as Japan's first trading port with the West, this was the beginning of exchanges with the Netherlands. Remnants of this extensive international exchange remain, including churches, historical sites, and confectionery culture. In July 2018, two of the island's assets (Kasuga Village, Mount Yasuman, and Nakaenoshima Island) were registered as a World Heritage Site under the title "Hidden Christian Sites in the Nagasaki and Amakusa Regions," making it an island steeped in the history of Christian faith. One-fifth of the island is designated as Saikai National Park, and a short drive away you'll find a number of viewpoints surrounded by crystal blue waters and magnificent nature. You'll find yourself constantly snapping away with your camera. The island's unique "treasure" will not disappoint, with its abundant seafood, one of its greatest attractions, and its cuisine, which allows you to fully savor its charms with both your tongue and your eyes.
