Tamaki is a 1880s farmhouse that has been lovingly rebuilt on an open site in Hakuba. Accommodation is in three bedrooms and a tatami room with futons. Our double room has a queen bed and an ensuite shower and toilet. We have two twin rooms whose beds can be pushed together to form a king bed. We have a large kitchen with 9 meters of counter space that is perfect for group cooking. A full size oven, microwave, rice cooker, toaster oven, and pod and drip coffee machines are available. Our huge live edge dining table comfortably seats 8. In warmer months, you can cook and eat and outside using two barbeque grills. We have an onsen-style bathroom with double vanity sinks and a hinoki soaking tub that overlooks a tsuboniwa with a Japanese maple tree. The house has a large (possibly unrivaled) selection of photobooks about Japanese houses, art, culture, and travel, and sound systems including a record player with many vinyl records. Although famous as a ski resort and hiking Mecca, Hakuba has a multitude of historic buildings, including temples and shrines, former castle sites, the historic Shio-no-Michi trade route, and one of Nagano's few preserved historic districts. We would be happy to tell you all about them. The oldest remaining kominka in Nagano operates as a museum 5 minutes from Tamaki by car. We wish our guests a happy and pleasant stay, and hope they leave our house knowing a little more about Japanese culture or with a renewed appreciation of it.
