Tucked into the coastal town of Aoshima, Miyazaki,
this 50-year-old kominka — a traditional Japanese folk house —
has been carefully restored into a guesthouse.
Thick wooden beams. Earthen walls. A shaded engawa veranda.
The bones of the building remain exactly as the craftsmen left them,
with just enough added to make you feel at home.
In the garden sits a barrel sauna.
Step out after a session, breathe in the sea breeze,
and let the sound of the ocean do the rest.
There's nothing quite like it.
In the shared living room, strangers from different countries
often find themselves talking late into the evening.
That kind of unexpected connection — it happens here more than you'd expect.
