■ A Stay Rooted in Local Culture and Community ■
Yugaku Tei is a 70-year-old luxury traditional Japanese house, renovated from a former timber merchant’s residence, with an expansive floor area of 500㎡.
Despite its convenient location just a 2-minute walk from Kii-Nagashima Station, the property is primarily offered as a private entire home rental.
Reborn in 2010 with modernized water facilities, Yugaku Tei is designed as a stay-style accommodation where guests can enjoy workshops and cultural experiences.
It is also an ideal stay for those interested in rural living in Japan or relocating to a traditional Japanese house.
■ The Beauty of Japanese Architecture Crafted by Master Carpenters ■
Built using high-quality timber, including locally sourced Kii-Nagashima cypress, carefully selected by the Fukiage family—master temple carpenters for 16 generations.
Constructed entirely with traditional Japanese building techniques and no modern materials, the craftsmanship is visible in every detail, including the intricate attic framework, making it truly worth experiencing.
Surrounded by the natural scent of wood, walk along polished wooden corridors and tatami floors, and immerse yourself in the texture, silence, and authenticity of traditional Japanese architecture.
■ A Versatile Event Space in the Earthen-Floor Hall ■
The traditional earthen-floor space (doma) on the first floor serves as a flexible event venue, hosting concerts, exhibitions, and pottery workshops with visiting artists.
While preserving this remarkable example of Japanese architecture, Yugaku Tei also functions as a cultural hub and a bridge connecting local communities with visitors.

About Your Stay
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
While preserving the charm of a traditional Japanese farmhouse, the water facilities have been fully upgraded with modern amenities for a comfortable stay.
In addition to an open-air bath and a private family bath, the property also features three shower rooms, offering a refined balance of nostalgia and comfort.
Between the “Gold Room” and “Silver Room” on the second floor stand two symbolic pillars said to house spiritual energy. When they feel inclined, these spirits may appear as a Zashiki-warashi, a playful guardian spirit believed to bring good fortune.
In the garden, you will find a suikinkutsu water harp and a small house for the spirit—if you are lucky, you may even encounter one during your stay.
Perfect not only for large group stays such as family trips or group travel, this private rental is also ideal for workations and corporate retreats in Japan.
◆ Cultural Experience Programs
From artist-in-residence programs that allow guests to engage in creative activities during their stay, to hands-on cultural workshops and community exchange events, Yugaku Tei offers a wide range of authentic Japanese cultural experiences.
◆ Create Your Own Tabletop Art
Experience crafting a unique tabletop object using five-colored stones from the Akabane River, paired with a base made of Yakusugi cedar.
