Kominka Tsugumi – Former Murata Tile Factory
From Grandma’s House to a Traditional Kominka Inn
The home where my grandparents once lived became vacant in 2019.
As I began visiting more often to sort through and tidy up, my affection for the house quietly grew each time I spent time there.
Wanting to give this old house a long life and share the charm I feel within it, I opened it as a farm stay—an inn where you can stay as if you were living here—officially welcoming guests in autumn 2023.
Former Murata Tile Factory
My grandfather ran a tile-making business.
For about 130 years—from the Meiji era through the Heisei era—the family trade was passed down through four generations.
The chimney that once fired the tiles and the charming wooden workshop across the road were removed for earthquake safety reasons. However, in the main house office, we have preserved books and materials related to roof tiles and their production. Please feel free to take a closer look.
When you open the heavy front door, you may find yourself wanting to say “I’m home.”
The warmth of various types of wood, gently shimmering glass, the comfort of tatami mats, beautifully carved transoms, a grand tokonoma alcove, and sunsets viewed from the hallway—
There are countless things to love about Kominka Tsugumi.
The steps up and down, unique to traditional houses, the low ceilings, and the everyday sounds of footsteps and sliding doors are surprisingly soothing.
The rooms have the atmosphere of a traditional ryokan, yet the comfort of a guesthouse or homestay.
This is a host-residing, one-group-per-day, private rental accommodation.
We would be delighted if this becomes a place where you feel, “I want to come back again.”
