Welcome to Retaruke – A Place of Restoration
— A Restorative Retreat That Connects Hokkaido’s Spirit to the Future —
Retaruke—its name means “restoration” in the Ainu language.
We named this retreat with the hope that guests will reconnect with nature with a clear, open heart and begin a new chapter in their lives.
This space was created with the theme of restoration, rooted in the local culture and envisioned as a special place to be passed on to future generations.
Rather than simply building something new, we have carefully inherited and incorporated Hokkaido’s natural landscape, traditions, craftsmanship, and memories.
⸻
Restoring Materials and Techniques
Doors and walls have been repurposed from antique fittings found throughout Hokkaido, meticulously polished and restored.
Surplus flooring materials from new construction sites—destined to be discarded—were given new life by craftsmen, one plank at a time, and hand-applied plaster walls complete the warm, textured interior.
The result is a space imbued with the care and warmth of true craftsmanship.
⸻
Furniture That Carries Memory
The kitchen was custom-built from a cherished antique tansu (traditional chest), lovingly restored by craftsmen formerly of the famed Gandhi House.
A large window is framed by six antique sliding panels (fusuma), restored on site by young artisans whose skill represents a new generation of craftsmanship.
All the furniture pieces are one-of-a-kind, handcrafted by artisans of Hokkaido:
• The dining table is made from cherry wood, known for its strong yet gentle grain
• The chairs are crafted from walnut, giving off a soft and natural warmth
• The sofa and table set are built from oak, offering a sense of solidity and comfort
Each piece reflects the character and beauty of Hokkaido’s natural wood.
⸻
A Stay That Feels Like Home
Even the washbasin is custom-made, a unique creation for this retreat.
In the bath, you can enjoy a kakenagashi-style design, where warm water flows gently over your shoulders—offering a relaxing experience akin to soaking in a hot spring.
⸻
Retaruke is more than just a place to stay.
It is a space where you can experience restoration—through nature, memory, and the warmth of human hands.
Let yourself unwind, surrounded by the richness of Hokkaido, and gently heal both body and mind.
