Wan-de-En

An inn that touches culture

+MORE

DESCRIPTION

Kawada-cho, Sabae City, now known as the production center of eyeglasses, is also a major production center of Echizen lacquerware with a history of 1,500 years. The inn itself, housed in a 150-year-old private house, was once a lacquerware craftsman and wholesaler. The area around the inn is particularly concentrated with lacquer-related houses.
The inn is located in an area with a high concentration of lacquerware-related houses. The tea ceremony as a traditional Japanese culture is an extraordinary experience that will be freshly appreciated by foreigners and Japanese alike.
Currently, the inn does not work with lacquer, but we have a wide selection of Echizen lacquer tableware, which will make an appearance at the tea ceremony. We will also guide you through the lacquerware experience. The inn is a very ordinary old private house, full of life, and you can experience the life of a farmer as it is.
The area hosts various events throughout the four seasons, so if your timing is right, you can enjoy observing and interacting with the local people.

【Carefully designed interior】
A corner of the living room has a fireplace that can be used as a tea ceremony room. The charcoal fire is made in the furnace, rice is cooked in a rice cooker, and matcha (powdered green tea) is brewed.

【We welcome the following people!】
* Foreign students and tourists:
The inn is popular among foreign travelers, especially those from Europe and the United States. It is a refreshing experience to stay in a traditional Japanese house without any decoration. The tea ceremony-style experience is a great opportunity to experience Japanese culture.
Mr. Araki's warm smile makes communication beyond words possible.
* Silver generation:
The scenery with mountains, rivers, and fields will soothe your soul. The simplicity of the 150-year-old minka (traditional Japanese house) will make you feel nostalgic and relaxed. Tea ceremonies are also recommended, regardless of whether you have experience in the tea ceremony.
* Groups of students, students in their 30s and 40s:
If you are interested in food, agriculture, local industry, and community development, this is the perfect place for you. How about learning at least one countryside dish to take home with you? We can also introduce you to facilities and people related to local industry and community development, so it is a good idea to be proactive. You can also enjoy the luxury of spending a quiet and relaxing time in the countryside.

* Active people:
Surrounded by mountains on three sides, this is the only area in the city designated as a mountainous area. You can enjoy trekking and hiking in the surrounding mountains. Eiheiji Temple, known as a Zen temple, and the Sea of Japan can be reached within an hour by car.

【Experiences, etc.】
All overnight stays include a tea ceremony-style dining experience using a chahangama(茶飯釜) kettle. Visitors can also experience local traditional crafts using Echizen lacquerware, Echizen washi(Japanese paper), and Echizen pottery. If desired, visitors can also try their hand at farming in a nearby field or try their hand at making lacquerware unique to the area.
For the lacquerware experience, you can visit the workshop of a Nitten artist (Chinkin-shi 沈金師) or a traditional maki-e (蒔絵) craftsman, where you can see the work of the artisan and watch him or her at work while you paint your own original lacquerware (advance reservations required).

【Meals】
Dinner is a one-pot, three-course meal served at a tea ceremony. After a short break, the tea is served in the second act, called the "back seat," where the tea is served in both thick and thin portions. Rice is freshly cooked in a tea kettle in front of you, and the main side dishes are local vegetables, including home-grown pesticide-free vegetables. Breakfast is simple, using fresh vegetables from our own vegetable garden.

The house was quaint and totally lovely.

I loved seeing the Japanese way of life, and the structure and experience of staying in a traditional japanese home. It was a very insightful, humbling and interesting experience. I definitely recommend it to everyone.

was a relaxing, heartfelt farm stay experience.

Staying in the Japanese countryside in a Japanese home is something I highly recommend. This experience in particular was great because of our host, Araki-san. She made us feel welcome in Echizen before we even entered her home. And at night, we ate a dinner of local foods with her and some of her friends. We learned so much about her life and her friends’ lives, along with Echizen and Fukui culture. The farm stay felt very personal and made me appreciate different, smaller aspects of Japanese culture. You can find hotels in any city in Japan, but you can’t find a hotel that will give you an experience like this. I highly recommend staying at “Wan de en” if you come to Echizen or Fukui. Araki-san is an amazing person with a beautiful, traditional home that she graciously opens to everyone.

I had a wonderful experience,

I had a wonderful experience with Stay Japan. The farm house was adorable and staying in the countryside was unique. Unlike hotels, this home was felt warmer. We shared meals and spent lots of time talking. It was an interactive stay and I learned a lot about Japan.

Araki-san is probably the best cook

"Araki-san is probably the best cook you will find around. I was in love with the homemade kimchi we had for dinner. Then, the next morning, she whipped out two handmade jams for breakfast. Do I need to spell out how delicious it was?

For the night, you can shower at her place or she could drive you to the onsen. We took her offer and got to soak in the hot water to wash away the cold. It was such a fabulous place to spend my weekend at. Araki-san will make you want to return to Fukui and specifically her home."
