"Hideway Tabaki," a former high-end traditional restaurant (ryotei) with a history spanning over a century, was reborn as an accommodation in the spring of 2024.
We invite you to spend a relaxing moment away from the hustle and bustle of daily life in this building — a structure that has woven together the history and culture of Takefu across the stylish Meiji, modern Taisho, Showa, and Heisei eras.

We recommend a longer stay — such as two or three nights, or even a week — rather than just a single night.

■ Experience the Charm of an Entire-House Rental
Choose from the "Yuri-no-ma" (Lily Room) — a suite of two connecting rooms at the back of the first floor with a view of the beautiful garden (sleeps 4) — or the "Fuji-no-ma" (Wisteria Room), a compact Japanese-style space formerly used as a tea ceremony room (sleeps 2). For relaxing together, guests are also free to use the "Take-no-ma" (Bamboo Room), with its comfortable sofa, and the "Matsu-no-ma" (Pine Room), with table seating.

■ A Peaceful Stay, Free from TVs and Clocks
To help you escape the hustle and bustle of daily life and savor your time in this historic former ryotei, the main building of Hideway Tabaki is intentionally free of televisions and clocks. Modern amenities such as Wi-Fi, a refrigerator, a washing machine, and a dryer are provided, making it convenient for workations or extended stays.

■ A Base for Visiting the Adjacent Café and Exploring Traditional Industries
On pleasant days, you can enjoy tea on the terrace of the adjacent "Cafe Tabaki" while gazing out at the garden. The property also serves as an ideal base for exploring Echizen's traditional industries and visiting local historical sites.

<Bedrooms>
■ Yuri Room (Lily Room)
Located at the back of the first floor, this suite consists of two adjoining rooms. It offers a prime vantage point where you can sit by the veranda window and leisurely admire the beautiful garden.

■ Fuji Room (Wisteria Room)
This room was formerly used as a tea ceremony room. Its compact Japanese-style design creates a serene atmosphere that helps soothe the mind.

■ Take Room (Bamboo Room)
Furnished with a comfortable sofa, this room invites you to relax at your leisure — whether you wish to chat or simply rest your weary body.

■ Matsu Room (Pine Room)
Equipped with table seating.
Please feel free to use this space for dining, conversation, or however else you please.

<Bathroom>
A fully tiled bathroom that evokes a sense of nostalgia for the Showa era.
Although we considered replacing the tiles, the manufacturer has discontinued production, so we repaired the cracks using the kintsugi technique.

Important Information

■ As we have endeavored to preserve the original atmosphere and architectural character of this former ryotei, the building has limited thermal insulation and airtightness. We ask for your understanding in this regard.

■ Many features of the Hideway Tabaki main building were crafted by artisans of the era; as a result, many elements cannot be replicated if damaged. We kindly ask that you use the facilities with care during your stay.

■ Hideway Tabaki is located in a residential neighborhood, so we ask that you be mindful of noise, including conversation. Please keep noise to a minimum after 8:00 PM.

■ Smoking is prohibited throughout the entire Hideway Tabaki property.

■ Access to the garden is prohibited after sunset due to safety concerns.
Use of the terrace seating overlooking the garden is permitted until 9:00 PM.

■ Pets are not permitted.

Adjacent "Cafe Tabaki"
We offer coffee and tea prepared with carefully selected beans and water, a weekly rotating cake set, and seasonal treats such as Fukui's winter-exclusive mizu-yokan (soft jellied bean paste). On sunny days, you can relax on the terrace while enjoying the view of the garden.
(As this is a café menu rather than a meal service, separate payment is required.)

① Hideway Tabaki Original Soba-Making Experience

② Hideway Tabaki Original Early-Morning Zazen (Zen Meditation) Tour at Kongoin Temple

Duration: 1 hour (starts at 7:00 AM)
Price: 2,000 yen per person
Payment: Collected at the property on the day (Hideway Tabaki collects the fee and remits it to Kongoin Temple afterward).

③ Echizen Washi Paper-Making Experience

The History of Hideway Tabaki

Hideway Tabaki was built in 1892 (Meiji 25) by Kitaro Takano, who had made his fortune in the tobacco trade. The name embodies the wish for "a place where abundant joy overflows like leaves." Originally known as Reisen Yutei, it operated as a high-end ryotei that hosted everything from ceremonial occasions — weddings and funerals — to political gatherings. Its luxurious design featured a grand hall on the second floor capable of seating over 100 guests, with every room offering a view of the pond-style Japanese garden. After ceasing operations as a restaurant in 2019 and undergoing revitalization from around 2022, it was reborn in 2024 as an exclusive entire-house rental.

Echizen City in Fukui Prefecture is home to five major traditional industries — Echizen Washi (Japanese paper), Echizen Lacquerware, Echizen Tansu (chests), Echizen Ware (pottery), and Echizen Forged Blades — each with a history spanning over a thousand years.

Nearby, you can easily enjoy hands-on experiences with these traditional crafts: "Echizen Washi no Sato" (Echizen Washi Village), home to the "Papyrus-kan" (offering papermaking workshops) and the "Udatsu Craft Museum" (a relocated Edo-period papermaking house), as well as "Takefu Knife Village," where visitors can try forging a blade at a site with roughly 700 years of history.

The area is also dotted with historic sites, such as Okamoto Jinja and Otaki Jinja — the only shrines in Japan dedicated to the deity of paper — Gotanjo-ji Temple (known as the "Cat Temple"), and Murasaki Shikibu Park, linked to the famous Heian-era author. There are also numerous cultural attractions, including the Echizen City Takefu Public Hall Memorial Museum and the "Chihiro's Birthplace" Memorial Museum.
